If you will be attending the University of Michigan, or you are already a student at this school, and you are lesbian or gay, you need to be aware of the University of Michigan Gay and Lesbian Alumni Society Scholarships that are available. Although these gay and lesbian scholarships do not award huge amounts of funds, they are still important, and very competitive.

The University of Michigan Gay and Lesbian Alumni Society is not the same as the University of Michigan Alumni Association. These are two separate organizations. The University of Michigan Gay and Lesbian Alumni Society was established for the purpose of creating a supportive and positive environment for LGBT students and their allies at the University of Michigan. Equally, the organization also strives to eliminate discrimination and homophobia that is directed towards the LGBT community on campus and elsewhere.

The University of Michigan Gay and Lesbian Alumni Society does not just exist for past students, it also exists for present students, faculty, and other staff at the University who are also a part of the LGBT community.

The UMGALAS offers two gay and lesbian scholarships each year. The first is the Detroit Eagle Gay Community Award, and the second is the Jim Toy Award. The Detroit Eagle Gay Community Award was created by Frank Blondale. The Jim Toy Award was created for the purpose of honoring Jim Toy for twenty four years of service to the LGBT community as one of the coordinators of the Lesbian, Gay Male and Bisexual Programs Office at the University of Michigan.

The two awards are presented twice each year – once in the fall, and once in the winter. Each award is $500, and the numbers of available awards that are given each year are dependent on the funds that are available from the endowment. The winners of the awards will have been heavily involved in activities, organizations, events, and issues that affect the LGBT community, and it seems that preference is given to support and activism in the LGB communities of color.

In order to be eligible for this gay and lesbian scholarship, you must be a full time student, and you can be a graduate or undergraduate at the University of Michigan. Your activism and participation in the LGBT community must be documented as normally does with all LGBT scholarships. You must also agree to allowing the organization to use your name, and possibly your likeness, in the media should you win the award.

Applications for the U of M lesbian and gay scholarship must be submitted by February of each year. If you meet all of the eligibility requirements, your chances of being selected as a winner will weigh heavily on your activism and the essay that you submit with your application. While other factors are important, these two factors are extremely important. Winners are notified by the end of March each year.

This is one of the few opportunities available to the LGBT community, in terms of scholarship funds, that is almost completely based on writing skill.

The Queer Foundation was established and incorporated as a non-profit organization in the state of Washington. The goal of the organization is to improve the circumstances of LGBT youth through education, and this is done with the Queer Foundation Scholarship Fund. The Queer Foundation Scholarship Fund was established in 2006. The award must be used to enter into queer studies, but there is no clarity as to what fields this actually covers.

In order to be eligible for the Queer Foundation Scholarship Fund, you must be an LGBT student who is out. You must also prove that you are an activist for the LGBT community, have a social conscience, be willing to fight discrimination, and be committed to the goal of social change. The Queer Foundation LGBT Scholarship Fund is officially called the Queer Foundation Effective Writing and Scholarships Program.

Each year, this fund awards at least one $1000 scholarship to a high school student who meets the eligibility criteria through a national essay contest. Each year, the foundation presents a different theme for the essay contest and LGBT scholarship program. The essays that win form Queer-the Curriculum Materials, which are used in high schools to raise awareness. While LGBT students are the focus for this scholarship award, their allies are also welcome to participate.

There is, of course, more to writing a great essay to win one of these awards. If you are selected as a finalist, you will then have to participate in an individual interview. Your references will also be checked at that point, and those who do well in the interviews, and pass the reference check will be awarded the $1000 prizes, which can be used at any accredited college or university in the United States.

Aside from the $1000 LGBT scholarship, the winners are additionally awarded with mentoring, tutoring, and academic advisement. Winners must maintain a good grade point average and give back to the LGBT community. The foundation is also favorable to those students who continue to publish queer studies papers as well as those who volunteer to mentor high school students and their college peers.

The deadline for submitting your application and essay occurs each year in February, and a great deal of focus is placed on the originality of the essay, the accuracy, effectiveness, objectivity, grammar, sentence structure, spelling, and punctuation. Your ability to change the reader’s opinion or attitude is extremely valuable in the selection process.

The Queer LGBT scholarship award is not that high but it may not be that difficult as others to win and it will help pay for some college tuition which is better then nothing at all.

The Markowski-Leach Scholarship is named for a gay couple, Tom Markowski and Jim Leach who wanted to leave a legacy behind. The initial funds for the gay scholarship program came from a bequest left by Jim Leach, and at his request, the fund was set up in both of the men’s names. The purpose of the scholarship fund was to assist gays and lesbians in their quest for further education. Both Tom Markowski and Jim Leach died of AIDS, two years apart. The fund was established in 1989, and more than $200,000 has been awarded since that time.

While being gay or lesbian is a requirement to win the award, there is much more to it than that. The bequest stated that the award should be made to gay or lesbian students who would most likely make a substantial contribution to society and improve the image of gay and lesbian people everywhere.

The gay scholarship award is available to any student who meets the qualifications regardless of their chosen field of study, and regardless of proving financial need, however the student must be attending or plan to attend the University of California at Berkeley, Stanford University, or San Francisco State University. You can be a graduate student or an undergraduate student to qualify for this scholarship for being gay.

Since the bequest made for this scholarship award stated that the award should be made to an gay student who shows promise for making a substantial contribution to society, it is vital that your personal statement include information as to how you plan to make such a contribution, or how you are already working towards that end. This plays a vital role in the selection process. Any past work that you have done to make such a contribution will also be strongly considered, so be sure to include this information.

While the award amount varies from year to year, the average amount of the award is about $1250, but the full amount is not paid at one time. Instead, the award is divided by the number of terms or semesters in the award year. You must be or plan to be a full-time student to quality, and you must continue to have academic excellence in order to remain eligible during the award year. Your GPA must be 2.5 in order to apply, and you must maintain that GPA.

The application deadline for the Markowski-Leach Gay Scholarship occurs around the middle of April each year, but applications are usually available and accepted as early as February. Selections for the winners are made in the early part of May each year.

On the first Friday of each month, a group of gay men meet for breakfast. Those men form the club that has become known as the First Friday Breakfast Club, which has become a non-profit corporation. These men meeting for breakfast once a month is not insignificant, as they have established the FFBC, or First Friday Breakfast Club Gay Scholarships program. While this gay scholarship fund was created to improve the image of gay men through education, it is not solely intended for gay students.

The First Friday Breakfast Club is based in Iowa, and is actually the largest breakfast club in the state. The member list of the club is kept private, and the purpose of the club scholarships program is to further the education of future leaders to improve the image of gay men everywhere. The scholarship is funded almost completely by donations from members as well as non-members of the group, but fundraisers are held throughout the year for the fund as well. The organization feels that education is the biggest key to ending racism, discrimination, and intolerance for all people.

The First Friday Breakfast Club is awarded in the amount of $2500, and is available to high school seniors. It is not limited to gay teenagers at all, however. Instead, it is available to any person, male or female, who can show that they have actually worked in the efforts to increase awareness and tolerance for the gay and lesbian community. Your race, religion, sex, sexual orientation, creed, or marital status plays no role in the selection process for this gay scholarship. While your GPA does matter, your involvement in activities and organizations that work towards equality and tolerance for all seems to be what matters the most to the selection committee for these gay and lesbian scholarships.

Aside from this requirement, the applicant must also reside in Iowa, but the winner is free to attend any college or university, including trade schools, in the World. It is important to realize that the scholarship information does not state that you must attend a school in the United States, but the school must offer post-secondary level education, and it must be accredited by a governing agency. It also does not state that you have to be a citizen of the United States – only that you must reside in Iowa.

The deadline for applying for the FFBC gay and lesbian scholarships is March 31st of each year, and no application materials will be accepted after that date. The Award is made on May 1st of each year. If funds allow, more than one $2500 gay scholarship will be awarded each year, but this is not guaranteed, as it depends on how much the First Friday Breakfast Club Scholarship committee is able to collect through fundraisers and donations throughout the year.

The Delaware Valley Legacy Fund offers assistance to groups and individuals in making and winning LGBT scholarships to strengthen the community through education.

The Delaware Valley Legacy Fund, or DVLF, was founded in 1993. Since their founding, the organization has partnered with The Philadelphia Foundation, which was established in 1918. Today, the endowment fund managed by the DVLF is valued at over $750,000. Other individuals have pledged endowments to the organization, for the future, which will raise the value to over $8 million. The purpose of both organizations is to create social equality for everyone, and the partnership has strengthened the abilities of both organizations.

The DVLF manages five separate scholarships. The Justin Eng Scholarship, which is awarded to a student from the University of the Arts, is only available to LGBT Students. This award is worth $2500, and the deadline for applying is in February of each year.

The Kay Longcope Scholarship of the National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association is available to LGBT students who are planning careers in the field of journalism. The deadline occurs towards the end of January each year, and the award amount is unspecified.

The Leroy F. Aarons Scholarship Award of the National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association is also available only to LGBT students who are majoring in Journalism. The amount of the scholarship award is $5000, and the deadline for applying occurs in January each year.

The Robert Posner Scholarship Award is earmarked for an LGBT student who is majoring and plans a career in the visual arts. The scholarship is worth $1500, and the deadline for applying is in early February each year. Not all visual arts students will be eligible for this award.

The Sean Halpin Memorial Scholarship Fund is the fifth scholarship that is managed by the Delaware Valley Legacy Fund. These law school scholarships are awarded to an LGBT student who is attending Law School in the Philadelphia area. You must apply by late June of each year, and the award amount is $1000.

While all of these scholarships can be applied for through the Delaware Valley Legacy Fund, each LGBT scholarship has its own application, application requirements, and eligibility criteria. If you qualify for more than one of these scholarships, you are welcome to apply for multiple awards. It is important to note that more scholarships for LGBT will be added to the Delaware Valley Legacy Fund in the future, and at present, all of the LGBT scholarships managed by this organization are only available to LGBT students, although LGBT allies may also be considered in some cases.

You may not be aware that there is an organization called the Psychological Study of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Issues. This organization is a part of the American Psychological Association, and is instrumental in researching the problems and issues that the LGBT community faces. There are also two LGBT scholarships available through this organization for certain graduate students.

The Maylon-Smith Scholarships for LGBT is administered by the Society for the Psychological Study of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Issues. This organization welcomes anyone who is passionate about the issues and concerns of the LGBT community, in terms of psychological research, education, practice, training, and advocacy. The organization works on the international, national, and local level. The Society for the Psychological Study of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Issues is also known as APA’s Division 44.

The Malyon-Smith Scholarship Program was named for the two founding presidents of Division 44. One of these people was Alan Malyon, and the other was Adrienne Smith, who was already deceased when the scholarship program was implemented.

The Malyon-Smith Scholarships award up to $1000 to a graduate student who is studying in the field of psychology, to enable that student to perform research in the psychology of gender identity and sexual orientation. You must be working at the graduate level, and you must be a full time student enrolled in the Department of Psychology at your school. Unfortunately, if you are majoring in social work or sociology, or any other allied psychology discipline, other than psychology, you are not eligible for this scholarship program.

Additionally, you must currently be working on a research project, or have a viable plan for such a project, and that project must pertain to sexual identity or gender issues. This information must be a part of your application, and will strongly be considered during the selection process. You must also include a copy of your curriculum vitae. Your faculty supervisor must also include information in your application that tells the selection committee about the quality of your research, and the feasibility of your research project. Without this information, your application for the Smith scholarship will not even be considered, and you must truly focus on this part of the application, as it is one of the most important deciding factors for the selection committee.

The deadline for applying for the Malyon-Smith Scholarshps occurs in early February of each year, and it is not known when the final selections will be made.

The same organization also offers the Bisexual Foundation Scholarship Award, which also awards graduate students up to $1000. This award is made to students who are doing research solely in the area of the psychology of bisexuality. The same requirements apply to this LGBT scholarship, as to the Malyon-Smith Scholarships.

The reason that the group felt that the LGBT community needed its own philanthropic organization was because donations that would have otherwise gone to this community went to organizations that were more organized and sophisticated instead.

The idea behind the Pride Foundation worked, and since 1985, the organization has awarded more than $8 million in funds to support the LGBT community, and the majority of those funds have gone to education. The Pride Foundations vision is to help create a world where everyone has mutual respect, honors diversity, and equality without question. The Pride Foundation celebrates and embraces the differences in each and every human being. The Foundation believes that the best way to create this world is through education.

In order to be eligible for the Pride Scholarship Program, you must be a resident of Alaska, Washington, Montana, Idaho, and Oregon. The program offers more than 50 separate scholarships, and one application alone will put you in the running for all of the scholarships administered by the Pride Foundation that you are eligible for. The application deadline occurs on January 31st of each year.

Each of these Pride scholarships award different amounts, different numbers of LGBT scholarships, and has different rules and regulations as to how the funds are distributed and how they can be used. While your residency is a factor, different awards will be available for certain regions in the states that are covered, for students of color, for students who have LGBT parents or guardians, students who are studying in a specific field, athletic students, and more.

Most of the Pride scholarship funds can be used at any accredited school that will result in a post-secondary education or degree program. Most are also available for graduate students and undergraduate students. Students who have been cut off from friends, family, or other support because of their sexual orientation or gender identity are strongly encouraged to apply for these LGBT scholarships. For some Pride scholarships, you do not have to identify as LGBT. Instead, if you are a LGBT supporter or ally, and you contribute to the LGBT community, you may be encouraged to apply.

The Eychaner Foundation Scholarship Program

The Eychaner Foundation Scholarship is also a LGBT scholarship because it’s a minority scholarship program and LGBT students are considered minorities.

If you are a lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender (LGBT) student, you are considered to be a minority student, and this makes you eligible for the Eychaner Foundation Scholarship Program, which was set up specifically to help pay for the educations of minority students – to the tune of $35,000. This is essentially a minority scholarship program and would make an excellent LGBT scholarship opportunity.

Founded in 1975, the Eychaner Foundation was started by Rich Eychaner as a non-profit organization. The purpose of the organization is to promote tolerance for people from all walks of life. The foundation does not just offer the Howard and Mildred Eychaner Scholarship for Minority Students, but also manages the Matthew Shepard Scholarship Program. Since these programs were started, more than one million dollars in minority scholarships have been awarded.

The Howard and Mildred Eychaner Scholarship is only available to minority students who graduate from DeKalb High School in DeKalb, Illinois. Those students who win this award must show academic aptitude and achievement, as well as community service. Financial need is also a consideration. Additionally, you must have a GPA of 3.0 or better, as well as an ACT score of at least 22. This is a renewable scholarship that will pay up to $35,000 over a four year period. The funds may be used for books, tuition, or fees, but it can only be used at Northern Illinois University.

The Matthew Shepard award was set up in memory of Matthew Shepard who was killed at the age of 21 because he was gay. The Eychaner Foundation set up the scholarship fund in his memory in 2000, in an effort to further promote tolerance and awareness. Winners of this award must attend high school in the state of Iowa. The same standards are required to win this award, but additionally, you must show that you are active in the LGBT community.

There are two levels of this award. The first is the Silver Eagle Award, which pays $7000 over four years, and the second is the Gold Eagle Award, which pays up to $35,000 over a four year period, if you are attending a college in Iowa. The Silver Eagle Award can be used at any college in the United States.

Applications for the Eychaner Foundation Scholarship and the Matthew Shepard Scholarship are available in January each year, and the cation deadline for both LGBT scholarship programs occurs in March of each year, with winners announced in May. It is important to note that the Matthew Shepard Scholarship is only available to LGBT students, while the Eychaner Foundation Scholarship is open to all minorities. It is also important to remember that the Eychaner Foundation Scholarship is only open to students of DeKalb, Illinois who will be attending Northern Illinois University, and only those students are welcome to apply.

Examples of those who have won the award in the past include people who have worked on efforts to end the Vietnam War, for civil rights, racism issues, homophobia, and oppression in all forms. This scholarship program is funded 100% by donations, so the award amount, and the number of awards given, change from year to year. However, the highest amount ever awarded by this scholarship fund was $10,000. The amount awarded to you, however, will be dependent on how much is available in the fund, and how much you need for your education.

Applications for the Davis-Putter Scholarship Fund are not available until January of each year. The deadline for applying occurs on April 1st of each year. Applicants must be able to prove that they have been active in the struggle for social equality – even if equality issues do not apply directly to them. You must also show financial need, and prove that you have the ability to perform well academically.

This potential LGBT scholarship award is open to graduate students and undergraduate students who are enrolled in an accredited college. Your application package must include your application, transcripts, and letters of recommendation, a financial statement, a photograph, and a personal statement. You do not have to be a citizen of the United States, but you must live in the United States and plan to attend school there. Preference is given to students who also intend to remain in the United States after graduation.

The Davis-Putter Scholarship Fund – a great source of LGBT financial aid – is ideal for those who are members of the LGBT community, because members of that community are almost always active in equality events at some point, and discrimination against those who are members of the gay community is the most common discrimination that we experience today.

The Point Foundation partners with a wide range of corporations, philanthropic people, and other foundations for this purpose. The Point Foundation was established in 2001, and since that time, the organization has awarded more than $3 million to LGBT students.

The Point Foundation National LGBT Scholarship Fund awards students with funds to cover the cost of tuition, supplies, room and board, books, living expenses, and transportation associated with their education. Each award is worth approximately $13,600, but more than that is spent on each winner, as each winner is also mentored and offered leadership training. The total amount spent on each winner yearly is approximately $34,000.

Those who win a Point Scholarship, and become Point Scholars, must continue to show academic achievement and be willing to contribute to the LGBT community. The contribution to the LGBT community is accomplished through an individual community service project. Because the scholarship does not cover the entire cost of education, Point Scholars are expected to find additional financing elsewhere, or to work while attending school to help cover those expenses.

The function of this organization is to the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender community about sports, whether those sports are individual or team based, but at the same time, they work with the general public, including the LGBT community to do away with discrimination against the LGBT community – especially those who participate in sports. Team DC is one of many members of the General Assembly of the Federation of Gay Games, and the organization coordinates the Gay Games and Cultural Festival every four years.

Self identified LGBT students are welcome to apply for the Team DC Student-Athlete Scholarship, whom has made a verifiable contribution to the LGBT sports community. This student will also be a participating athlete. Ideally, this individual will have also made a difference in improving the image and perception of the LGBT community through the sport that he or she participates in. The winners of these awards will be graduating high school seniors, but they may also be students who are currently enrolled in college in the Washington D.C. area.

If an LGBT student wins one of these scholarship awards, he or she must attend an accredited college or university in the Washington D.C. area. You must prove academic excellence. You must also be a positive role model in the LGBT community. Naturally, you must be out as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender. In terms of athletics, the winner will have participated in interscholastic athletics or intercollegiate athletics, but other competitive sports will also be considered. This includes sports that you participate in through private clubs, recreation leagues, and similar sports programs.

The Team DC Student-Athlete Scholarship awards the winners $2000, which can be used for tuition, books, room and board, or other housing. At least one scholarship is awarded each June, but additional LGBT scholarships may be awarded based on the availability of funds.

The areas that are included for participating in the Team DC Student-Athlete Scholarship program include the District of Columbia, Mongomery County, Prince George’s County, Loudon County, Prince William County, Fairfax County, Arlington County, and the City of Alexandria.

Applications for the Team DC Student-Athlete Scholarship must be submitted and received no later than June 1st of each year. The selection committee chooses three finalists to meet with for personal interviews, and then a decision is made for the winner. Winners are notified by July 1st of the same year, and the funds are awarded, in one payment, in August.

Being out is incredibly important to this organization in terms of the scholarship winners, because winners must allow the organization to use their names and pictures in publications and promotional materials for LGBT HEART. You must be out not only to the LGBT community, but to the non-LGBT community as well.

The potential for winning is greatly increased if you can show that you have a commitment to the health of the LGBT community, or that you have already made contributions to the health of the community. Your past achievements play a huge role in the selection process for the LGBT HEART Scholarship, but your future plans and goals in regards to the health of the LGBT community also play a part. If you make the finals for the award, you will have to take part in a personal interview, which can be conducted via telephone.

The LGBT scholarship funds that are won can be used towards the cost of tuition, books, and fees. The funds can also be used towards personal expenses or dissertations. The funds are paid directly to the student, and not the school that they are attending. The funds are disbursed to the student twice each year, in January and again in September. The student is responsible for reporting the award to the Internal Revenue Service and the appropriate department at their school, if this is required for the student. The deadline for applying for the LGBT HEART Scholarship occurs at the end of June each year, and winners are announced in early September. This is a non-renewable gay scholarship award.

The purpose of Peacock Productions, also known as Peacock in the Park was founded in 1987 by Mr. Johnson, who is a drag entertainer. He was the Rose Empress of the Imperial Sovereign Rose Court, which is the oldest non-profit organization for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community in Oregon.

Mr. Johnson and his sister Misty both passed away in 1993. Audria M. Edwards passed away in 1987 – while performing with her son during the annual Peacock in the Park event, and the fund continues in their memories, and the organization still exists for the purpose of educating people about the LGBT community and all that it has to offer the world. Because Mr. Johnson died of AIDS, the organization also strives to raise awareness and support research for HIV and AIDS.

The Audria M. Edwards Scholarship fund was established in 1987, and started awarding funds in 1992. Since then the fund has awarded $167,000 to students who are members of the LGBT community and their children. Only those who live in Oregon or Southwest Washington are eligible to apply. You must have also resided in one of these areas for more than one year. This information tells us that the organization awards close to $10,000 each year.

To be eligible for these LGBT scholarships, you must be a member of the LGBT community, or a child of someone who is, and you must show financial need. You must also be seeking an undergraduate degree. You must be pursuing a degree in trade, academics, vocational skills, or the arts to qualify, and you must have already been accepted or already enrolled in an accredited college or university.

Once all of the applications have been reviewed, finalists will be called in for a personal interview. Selections are based first on qualifications, and second on financial need, followed by clarity of your educational objectives. The deadline for applying for the Audria M. Edwards Scholarship for LGBT is May 1st of each year. The amount of the award and the number of awards given each year depend on the amount of donations that are taken in by the fund each year, as the fund is solely replenished with donations which is true of many gay scholarships today.

If you are trying to finance your education, you know that $10,000 will go a very long way. If you are a lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender student, there are many LGBT financial aid scholarships open to you, and while the Dillenkoffer Endowment Scholarship Program is open to everyone, due to the terms and purpose of the program, being an LGBT student does give you an advantage.

The Dillenkoffer Endowment was founded in the memory of Gayle Dillenkoffer, who died in 2006. The fund also exists for the purpose of supporting gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender teens that live in either Kansas or Missouri by providing scholarships to help cover the cost of tuition for college. It is the belief of the endowment that LGBT teens have a harder time getting educated because of the discrimination and equality that they face from their peers as well as the adults in their lives.

When you apply for the Dillenkoffer Endowment Scholarship Program, it is vital that you give a great deal of consideration to the mission of the organization. The mission of the organization is to reward teens who are gay who have demonstrated the ability to succeed despite personal and academic challenges, to support them through higher education, and to provide them with the necessary tools to become role models for other young adults.

The LGBT scholarships offered through this organization is thought to be one of the best available for LGBT students, as it pays $10,000 each year for four years for the winner – which is huge. You stand a better chance of winning the award if you are an LGBT student, and you must have at least a 2.75 GPA. Additionally, you must be able to show the selection committee how you have helped to make a difference in your community through community or school activities, organizations, or involvement. While you must reside in Kansas or Missouri, you must also be planning to attend a college in Kansas or Missouri.

Each year, the deadline for applying occurs in March, but you can apply as early as January. You must be willing and able to travel to Kansas City for an interview, and selections are made by the committee in May. There is some conflicting information. Some information claims that only LGBT students are eligible, while other information states that all students are eligible to apply. If you are not an LGBT student, it is important that you verify your eligibility for this gay scholarship through the organization before applying.

Because this LGBT financial aid scholarship program is so incredibly lucrative, you should expect the competition to be stiff, but some believe that there isn’t that much competition because of the limited area that the scholarship is available to, as well as the fact that preference is given to openly LGBT students.

If you are a member of the LGBT community, meaning that you are a lesbian, you are gay, you are bi-sexual, or transgender, or connected to this community in some other way, and you intend to pursue a higher education, you need to know about the Equity Foundation and particularly the Equity Foundation Scholarships that are available.

Founded in Oregon, in 1989, the Equity Foundation exists for the purpose of doing away with prejudice against certain groups of people – specifically prejudice against those who are gay, lesbian, bi-sexual, or transgender. Initially, the activities of the organization focused on funding other organizations that address the same issues, and the Equity Foundation still makes grants to those organizations, in addition to managing eight separate LGBT scholarship programs for members of the LGBT community.

The eight Gay scholarship programs that the Equity Foundation manages include the Bill and Ann Shepherd Legal Scholarship Fund, which awards third year law students with financial awards that vary from year to year. The deadline for this fund is in late June of each year. Also included is the Pride of the Rose Scholarship Fund, with a deadline that occurs in late July of each year. This scholarship is awarded in varying amounts to those who live in the quad county area of Portland, Oregon and Clark County, Washington, who are also members of the LGBT community or their children.

Those who live outside of the Portland, Oregon area may be interested in the Just Out Scholarship Fund, which is also awarded in varying amounts each year. The deadline for this LGBT scholarship is late June of each year, as is the deadline for the Kaiser Permanente Northwest Pride Scholarship, which is available to those who reside in Northwest Oregon and Southwest Washington in varying amounts. For this scholarship, however, you must be pursuing an education in healthcare.

The Portland Area Business Association Scholarship is also managed by the Equity Foundation, in varying amounts, and the deadline for applying is in late June of each year. The Armistead Maupin Creative Writing Scholarship is awarded in varying amounts, and while it must be applied for, there is also essentially a creative writing contest that determines the winner. The award varies from year to year and must be applied for by late June.

The last two LGBT college scholarships offered by the Equity Foundation are the Gregori Jakovina Endowment Scholarship and the Linfield Good Samaritan School of Nursing Scholarship Fund for future nurses. The Gregori Jokovina Scholarship is awarded in varying amounts each year, and must be applied for by December 31st of each year. The Linfield Good Samaritan Scholarship is awarded in the amount of $5000, and can be renewed for three years.

Each of these eight Gay scholarship opportunities has different eligibility requirements, but one thing remains the same for each, in that you must be a member of the LGBT community, or the child of someone who is. Without meeting that specification, you most likely will not be awarded one of these Equity Foundation Scholarships.

Whether you are a lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender – or not – you should take note of the numerous LGBT scholarships that are available through the Center for Lesbian and Gay Studies (CLAGS), as they can go quite a ways towards helping you to finance your college education.

The Center for Lesbian and Gay Studies was established in 1991, and it is known as one of the first university based research centers in the United States that is dedicated to concerns of lesbians, gays, bisexuals, and transgender people. The organization sponsors several public programs, and also offers numerous fellowships and financial awards to college students and scholars. The Center for Lesbian and Gay Studies is located at the City University of New York, and is often referred to as CLAGS.

Among the many fellowships and LGBT scholarships available through the Center for Lesbian and Gay Studies, the Martin Duberman Fellowship may be the most popular. The deadline for applying for this award occurs in mid-November each year, and the award amount is $7500. This award is made to either a tenured professor at a university, or to an advanced independent scholar who is doing research on the LGBT experience.

The Joan Heller-Diane Bernard Fellowship is also managed through the Center for Lesbian and Gay Studies. This fund makes two awards in the amount of $5000 each and two additional awards in the amount of $1250 each annually. The deadline for applying is mid-November of each year. This award is made to a graduate student, an independent researcher, or a college professor who does not have tenure.

Graduate students, academics, and independent scholars are also invited to apply for the CLAGS Fellowship by mid-November of each, for an award worth $3500. This award is given based on your dissertation or a book that you have written. Additional awards that are available through the Center for Lesbian and Gay Studies include the Robert Giard Memorial Fellowship, in the amount of $7500, the Out History Fellowship in the amount of $2500, the Sylvia Rivera Award in the amount of $1000, The Paul Monette-Roger Horwitz Dissertation Prize in the amount of $1000, the Graduate Student Paper Award in the amount of $250, and the Undergraduate Student Paper Award in the amount of $250.

While you may not be eligible for all of the gay scholarships available, the Center for Lesbian and Gay Studies encourages you to apply for all of those which you are eligible for, as more than one award can be made to you from different funds. If you do apply for more than one award, you only need to submit two letters of recommendation in total, but there is a different application for each program.

It is important to note that this is one of the few LGBT scholarships or fellowship opportunities available to the LGBT community that does not require the applicant to be a citizen of the United States.
